Falling together

So it’s nearly time for you to be released into the loving arms of your family;

And while you are still serving out your sentence – I am sure that the change of environment will provide a much needed reprieve for you all.

I hope you will be able to gather your strength and resolve, ready for the next chapter of this struggle.

As I am sure you are well aware by now, I wish that this nightmare could be over for you,

I look forward to the day when you will be free-legally free, properly free.

I look forward to watching you emerge out of all this, to see where your path takes you

It will not be the same path, You will not be the same man.

But I know that you will still have the capacity to still make your life something beautiful, and meaningful – for yourself and, as always, for others.

You just have to believe in that capacity, the power you have, like no one else – to still make a difference. That part of you is still inside of you, you just need to be able to free yourself enough to find that part of you.

  • The part that has, even in the worst of times, brought so many people together
  • So imagine the power it can have in better times
  • Just Hang on! It cant rain forever, the sun will shine again for you – in the meantime, just enjoy the rainbows

Taken from Blade Runner: My Story by Oscar Pistorius, 2008

It’s a great quote and one that I love very much. Of course it was meant for Oscar; of course it can be applied literally to racing. But  if we might be so bold as to steal it, it’s also a gift for those of us who aren’t athletes and will never achieve anything in sport. It’s for all of us who’ve felt failure, who’ve felt like we are the losers.

I’ve never won a race. Never. I’ve never been the best, the fastest, the tallest, the prettiest, the most impressive or the most talented. What I have done…

Dear Oscar,

for your future, I wish that you

…with a friend or a stranger
…for a lifetime

for more than the finish line…

We are all here to support you.

Kind regards
